Sighting in with dove loads is a good idea no matter gauge and load. In addition to saving a lot of money, you don’t get beaten up by the big stuff.
Speaking of getting beaten up by the big stuff. I patterned my Remington SP10 10 gauge the other day. Had 2 chokes and 4 loads I was testing. Wanted to shoot 1 of each round through each choke, so 8 shots total.

I only made it through 3 shots.

Years ago a buddy got a good deal on an 870 turkey special, put a scope on it and commenced to sighting it in a couple of days before season. I picked him up opening morning and noticed his hand was heavily bandaged. Turned out he’d run over 20 3” mags (2 ounce Federal) through it trying to zero the scope, and the saddle mount made his hand look like hamburger.

Only combo to beat me was a 10 gauge BPS with a 3 oz Nitro shell…

I was on the trap & skeet team in high school and shot Junior Olympic bunker trap. So I was used to shooting 300 shots a day. No amount of range time will ever prepare you for 3 1/2" 10 gauge. Feel like I have a concussion every time it goes off.

That's partially the reason I got the little .410. Thought it would be funny to have my 2 turkey guns be the largest and smallest shotguns on the market. The .410 weighs about 1/5 of what the remington weighs, so it might be seeing more use

What shells? My SP10 is pretty soft even with the big federal 2 ounce High Velocity loads.

my old retired NEF 10-------"kills on one end and maims on the other"

It definitely kills on one end.

Was wondering the same thing. My old Gold 10 had less felt recoil than my 870.

The Remington 3 1/2oz and the HEVI-shot 2 3/8oz were main ones. Don't know if I ever got around to testing the Federals. I know I have a box. The pattern on those Hevis is absolutely absurd. Way overkill. Can't imagine there'd be any target left if I used those Apex tss 10 gauge shells. At $80 a box, I doubt I'll be buying any.

It's obviously an older gun. My old man doesn't turkey hunt anymore so I rescued it from him. I probably need to do a full tear down on it and really do a deep clean.

Not looking for any sympathy here but if you want to know about recoil, look at the number and kind of loads I patterned in post #34. Over 150 pattern shots were fired over a few months with an 870 to get that data.

The 12-gauge 3 1/2-inch loads were punishing! I did finally shoot the last of them off a lead sled.
