Unions had their genesis courtesy the behavior of management. Research John L. Sullivan and the coal miners. Recall when Andrew Carnegie sent barge loads of armed mercenaries to break up the steel mill worker's strike?

It was when organized crime realized unions could become a cash cow that things went sideways.

Teacher's unions quickly realized the political power they could garner and while professing, "its for the children", all the while throwing them under the bus, in more ways than one.

BTW, many people are still unaware that Jimmy Hoffa has been found....once they got all the makeup off Tammy Faye Baker.

Generally speaking, trade unions work really well for both the employee and the employer. Both have signed the contract voluntarily. I sold well in excess 1M man hours of union labor and I can assure you the market supported those good wages. Both the employees and employers did well financially. Isn’t that the way it is supposed work?

The largest armed insurrection in the United States since the Civil war was a coal miner’s strike. There were casualties and deaths on both sides.

Even Mother Jones was involved.

I can’t remember the name right now I’ll reserach it and get back with y’all.

Anybody that says public unions should be obliterated has never worked for the state of California. I'm retired fire, public union, and I don't give a rats azz if you hate them, or me. When I started work for the state there was no union and we worked a 120 hour week with no overtime. Once he union came the working conditions and pay changed drastically. No less than three times the union sued the state to force them to do what they'd agreed to contractually. Without the union we'd have been the toilet bowl and the state would have crapped on us constantly. People who are pizzed because they don't have what I have can go fork themselves...they could have made the same choices and sacrifices I did, but didn't. For the folks who made those other choices, busted their butts, made the sacrifices necessary, succeeded and made a zillion dollars...outstanding on your part. I love it when people are successful in whatever path they choose. :tu

I want to like unions.
I have been screwed by a union I was a member of.
My problem with unions is they are 100% hypocritical.
Like when the workers at a municipal stadium are on strike- but football teams still come in and play. Or Teamsters roll in in their trucks and unload Springsteen's gear for his concert.

Not much solidarity.
Not much different than corporations.
And the Dem funding thing is obnoxious.

Mixed shop here.
Low voltage techs non union, pipefitter side union.
I sell work for both sides, so non union for me.
Inject ~150 669/483pipefitters into a company party, worth every penny.
Good/bad with both.
If ya got a beef with either, open your own business, America.

And, I foolishly thought the largest armed insurrection was January 6th, 2020.

My frustration with public unions is the condition and cost of our public education system. It does not appear to be very effective.
