That is not the rule in all tourneys!
Maybe not. I fished professional bass tournaments. We used barbs. They still do.

I haven’t heard of a bass club or circuit since the 70s that didn’t have heavy penalties for dead fish.

Several tournaments up here aren't as regimented, the just use the tourney to get $$ into the small towns. Weigh in is nothing but dead fish.
And Got help the poor *******s that want to launch without being registered! They get an arse chewing.

Sounds more like a fishing rodeo. They’re usually a kid deal down here and held in big ponds/small lakes, but sometimes there are divisions for grownups. Rarely are boats involved, and typically the pond will be heavily stocked with catfish prior to the event. The only type of kill “tournament” I hear about in this region will be at small public lakes where the agency has put out that it is way overstocked and out of balance, and a local bass club will have a tournament where you’re required to keep all bass.

There’s both a bass and a crappie tournament going on right here by the house, and I haven’t seen a boat in our bay since 9:30. There were quite a few early this morning.
