War is going to space whether we like it or not.
Not just the military applications for space warfare but a lot of everyday things we depend on rely on satellites in orbit. Somebody starts shooting them down or damaging them and it will cause havoc with modern day society.
Yep...the Naval Academy recently returned to teaching Midshipmen how to use a sextant and chart book. I believe (?) B-52s have a window to shoot the Sun and Polaris out of.
The defense contractors lobbied the **** out of everyone to make space force happen. Money money money.

FWIW... There's an interesting article in the Sept, 2018 edition of Reader's Digest (not yet on the internet) called "13 things you didn't know about space travel". Some of the content is trivial, but other content is about enterprise stimulated commercial space travel within the believe it or not relatively short future (even as soon as 2022).
Given that potential, be assured that some government will be in place to control and manage whatever occurs in space. It might as well be the US in control, because otherwise some other country (pick one) that's not so impacted by internal bickering will assuredly nominate themself to take charge and exert influence over space commerce to their own benefit.
