First year surf scoter drake... black feathers already coming in on the head.

Congrats, unique take for the east side. Juvies will often follow other birds down, so he may have been mixed in with other divers coming down from from AK.

I passed on this guy 3 times. Before he few over to GDT. 2 times he was with in 10 yards. I couldn't id it, first thought was diver of sorts. Then scoter crossed my mind. I didn't feel like cleaning a diver so I passed on it. LOL!

    Very cool.

We had what I am pretty sure were 6 scoters in a line pass by out of range the other day, in E WA. I never realized how many are in E WA until I really started to look. I think they are with the other divers but usually not mixed in with the raft; they're on the edges. I've also seen 2 large flocks of long-tail (Old Squaw) on the Snake R at first glance I thought were buffies.

I saw about 8 scoters using one area so consistently on the Columbia River I was thinking about painting a few old mallard decoys black to see if they'd decoy. I've never shot at a scoter.
