Well, looks like we're raising a baby dove.

I don’t hate raptors, and they can be fascinating to watch. That said, I don’t understand the modern reverence which makes them more special than other birds. Were the laws different, this Eagle wouldn’t have gotten my canvasback. I don’t know how many birds we average losing each season, but it’s well over 20.

Same,
lost 3 ducks in same morning to bald eagles this year.

You’ve obviously never done the work necessary for a good dove field. Lot of both time and money.
There are human pests too. In a freshly planted field (planted, fertilized, and tilled by hand) I found 3 young morons and their girlfriends "busting some clays" in the field. They got property permission from my property owner buddy's son who lived out of state.

I get that but how fuggin dumb do you have to be to stomp all over a clearly planted field? Typical millennials that have never hunted a day in their lives, just grabbed Dad's 870 to impress their girls. Apparently they never even seen a garden??

I didn't spare a cussword when I ran them off. Then had to run out and buy signs. I had sole permission to the property since I also managed and mowed all year.

Carolina Girl - seems there's just so much you don't know either. :doh

Don’t forget planting the Mary Jane…and then keeping the teens off if it!
So this is a trailcam pic on the same property. I was shocked to see it when I pulled it. I'm like W*T*H??? Called land owner as he's out west and asked where he had all the weed planted 'cause I ain't found it!! :l

Ends up a convict on the loose. He'd been spotted in the area. What tickled me was he was reported as wearing a big gold chain, basketball shorts and no shirt when spotted and ran. He took off into the wetland park our property butted up to which was waist high in weeds.

Height of tick season in a tick infested area. :dv

You've obviously never busted your arse all summer building and maintaining a Dove field. Coopers go from predator to pest.
No...no I haven't. But if I did, I would expect to attract a few hawks as cost of doing business and wouldn't bitch about mother nature because of it.

TBH....busting one's arse to build and maintain dove fields sounds less like hunting than growing and flooding corn to shoot ducks, but all that is probably best addressed in another thread so as not trivialize @widgeon's grief or distract from Petey's tragic end.

A good dove field takes a hell of a lot more work than a good duck field. Didn’t need to plant for doves when I was a kid because corn was just starting to come out in August. Farming here has changed a lot, and it’s a whole different situation. No field…no doves to shoot.

We don’t have dove hunts. We have dove shoots.
