First ducks I killed as a boy and still my favorite to hunt. We have a load of them out here on the coast.
Crazy how they act.
10 years ago I used to see a lot of black ducks up here in the northern valley not so many anymore. The can be tough to talk down in my experience
In my experience talking to them is a waste of time, but I have hunted some places (salt marsh ES) where they ate up the call.
About 20-25 years ago I was on a saltwater lake in NY and the sun had just set. On a good day you'd see 20 or so. Well as I'm picking up I watched groups of 100+ descend from up on high. I probably watched 2000 + over 20 minutes come and land in the middle of this lake. They were gone the next day. But that afternoon is burned in my memory.
In my experience black ducks either ignore you or they eat the call up. The colder and windier it is the more the latter becomes the norm, add ice and its game over. I don't know if there is a dumber duck than a black duck in the ice.
I agree with creed regarding black ducks and ice. That has been my experience as well in the backwater.
Well, don't know how every one else is doing but we are at rock bottom. We are lower than
Whale #%&# right now. Absolutely nauseating,Mr. Grinch! I went after deer today instead of duck that's historic.
