I had a very similar experience at a traditional small homestyle restraunt in Shenzhen. The kicker is thats its considered very disrespectful to not eat everything offered to you in that situation as a guest of honor....
Yep. I got sick at another banquet given in my honor by one of my students. One of the dishes was chicken that looked like it had a candle passed under it for about 30 seconds. It looked seriously undercooked to me. I tried to pick a bite from a part that I thought might have gotten a little heat, but no good. I was sick as a dog for days after that.

Doe’s Eat Place in Greenville, MS. When you walk-in thru the back door through the kitchen you begin to wonder if you’re in the right place. 2 big black guys looking after the parking lot. The food was great.
There’s a Doe’s on Government street in Baton Rouge, LA. Passed by it thousands of times but never stopped. You’ve peaked my interest, now I have to stop and eat.

Outside of a few fantastic steak houses in Omaha, NE we'd frequent when we went there for our sales meeting once/year including one where you could pick out your steak and they'd cut it per your instructions. You could get a 6" thick steak if you wanted.

The best, however, was the Alpine Inn in Ponca, NE my service rep and her husband took me to. They have the best friend chicken and they have platforms in the trees right next to the windows and they dump all of their chicken scraps on them and 50 raccoons feed on them literally 3 feet from your table. We drank two pitchers of margaritas, got blind *** drunk, visited their children's "calves" which weighed hundreds of pounds, and got pinned against the wall by a "calf". The next day at the meeting I was hungover and my only pair of casual pants stunk of the cow.

Over-rated and over-priced but we had to do it once.

There’s a Lambert’s down by me and it’s a grade A tourist trap. I guess people think rolls getting thrown is some sort of unique or interesting experience. Mediocre food, at best.

If I could go anywhere right now I'd go to that steak house in Ottawa, IL and get fried duck skins.
Sounds odd but its delicious.
Dang pandemic.
I kind of owe a couple guys steak dinners there and I'd sure like to repay.
