the green flies and mosquitos appear to not be as bad down at Assateague as they used to. I rarely drive all the way down south but think they closed half of the offroad zone to the VA line due to some nesting birds. I have been going down there for close to 35 years now with the dogs. the place has got really popular over the years now and often fills up at the regular beach access locations as well as the offroad zone. both daughters have jeeps now and also enjoy going down there. Ranger stopped last year and gave me a little grief about having the dog off the leash retrieving out in the ocean. I had told my crew to keep an eye out for them but nope everyone was watching me and dog when they snuck up then I heard a bunch of commotion and laughing behind me and looked back to see the ranger truck and 2 rangers approaching. I knew why they were there with the dog off the leash. she returned with her dead duck to the heal position holding it. as well as I have trained her I was worried she would get excited seeing a fresh face and run to them and told her to kennel and she ran right behind my truck to the leash and sat. they said despite her manners they couldn't let one person have a dog off a leash and then not say something to someone who had a wild dog or mean type. dog wasn't happy we had end the retrieving session though.
If you are miles from anyone dogs aren't an issue unless your doing something else the rangers don't like. Piping plover nesting season sucks
