Nothing better than a cold Zima or Mikes Hard lemonade after a good mani/pedi.
Several years ago a life insurance exam indicated I had a liver issue. So I went to my primary care doc, he asked me to quit drinking for four weeks and we'd test. So I did, and there was no change. Ended up doing that for six months before he finally sent me to a specialist who told me there was nothing wrong with my liver, and it was just a rate increaser for the insurance company.
In that six months I learned a bit about why I drink. Many of my favorite foods simply weren't nearly as enjoyable without an alcohol pairing. Then there was the social aspect whether at duck camp or at home with company. A cup of kindness adds to the atmosphere.
I like the taste of a well brewed Lager, especially in warm weather. If I want something sweet I go with a hard cider. I also like a good aged Bourbon, Highland Scotch, or Anejo Rum.
I have tried and tried and tried - but just can't find a wine that I like - so I don't drink wine.
I don’t like the taste of wine either.
But I’ve yet to find a drunk as fun as wine. I’ve also yet to find a hangover half as mean as one from wine.
Since retiring, I don't drink anymore nor do I drink any less. The last 5 years of employment was a living hell and the two beers I'd drink after getting home helped me settle down and relax.
90% of what I drink is wine, with only a few exceptions. A cold beer after working in the yard / at the end of a hunt or a couple of fingers of bourbon on the rocks maybe once a week. I do drink more at select social occasions (duck camp, vacation with other couples, etc.) I don't like hangovers so for that and other reasons (like basic maturity) you will not see me staggering around drunk.
I like a nice French Beaujlous (sp) or a Cali Cab-Sav w/Prime Rib or steak. I can't drink beer w/foods as it bloats me.
I enjoy a good stout beer about once a week but that's about the extent of my alcohol consumption. I used to enjoy red wine but my dentist didn't enjoy removing the stains on my teeth.
Never enjoyed hard liquor drinks. To me it's like consuming gasoline.
Getting drunk was a thing for me when I was younger but not anymore.
I use the gym to combat stress.
Initially as a teen, I drank strictly for the buzz... In doing so, I had some negative experiences with hard alcohol, and at the same time started developing a taste for beer... Currently, I also enjoy a good wine, but never did develop a taste for the hard stuff...
Fruity/sissy mixed drinks do taste good, but I find that they also are hard on the stomach, and for me, I am more inclined to have a hang-over with anything sweet and strong... And due to the taste, I find myself drinking "too much" of it.
Currently, I really enjoy the taste of a cold beer or good glass of wine, and I do enjoy copping a mild buzz. I enjoy the social aspect of a good drink and good friends or family... And, I enjoy the relaxation of a mild/moderate buzz. It has been 10 years or more since I have been drunk, and I do not remember the experience fondly or without embarrassment.
And then there is spicy food... The wife is Asian, and I cannot even begin to keep up with her tolerance for spicy food, and on many occasions I need a COLD beer (or three) to get a meal down without calling 911... Love the spicy food (and I do not have any exit issues with the food, just tolerating the spice while I am eating)... A cold beer makes it easier for me to eat...
As far as copping a buzz... Admittedly, a couple of beers help to relax the mind and body after a stressful day... Having an addictive personality, I have been careful to avoid drinking when "I need a drink," and I have avoided developing a taste for the hard stuff... It is tough to get "loaded" with 12 oz drinks that are 3-7% alcohol as compared to 1 oz drinks that are 40-60% alcohol.
Helps me aim better... urinal not a shotgun.
Nonsense aside, a lot of what has been described here applies to me. I have alcoholism on both sides of my family and grew up around a lot of folks with serious substance abuse issues that were seen as social lubricants at the time. So I always kept that in mind, the problem used to be that I would counter not drinking 6 nights a week with drinking like a madman one night a week.
In my teens/20s I drank too much. I have always been able to handle my booze and there are some fun stories to share but hangovers are brutal for me, I'm talking debilitating. I have slowed down a lot. I basically have two beers on Monday night after a softball game (20 weeks a year), and have a drink on Saturday night. It is rare for me to have more than 2-3 drinks in a sitting.
IPAs are straight up tasty and pair great with grilled food. Wine, I like it but in small amounts usually only with food.
