We had good flyers as our supplier had a netted in area between Turkey houses , about 35 yds wide , he exercises his birds twice a day !
they were on the smaller side at 2 1/2 lbs but flew like rockets ! We were planting 3500/4000 a year along with Chuckers and Sporting clays !
Those were the days !

They’re getting to be few and far between. Most of the birds fly the same-with a few exceptions-but it’s really the cover that used to matter to me. It’s been a while since I did a canned hunt, but Olive Hill, in Dunnigan and Garcia’s out of Lincoln beat sitting at home. I used to do it “for the dog”, after waterfowl ended.

He is asking about wild birds but i do some preserve hunts in the off season too. Mostly to get the dog and myself out of the house. He doesn't care if they are wild or not. Might hit SD again this year.

My mistake. I just assumed he meant CA. I hunted with Pine Shadows in Aberdeen, SD a few years back. I chose them because Mark is a famous Springer guy-I found him in Covey Rise. It was a great hunt: fantastic dogs, personable guide, great cover. All around it was a very good hunt. I’d highly recommend them.

This last winter was the most brutal in decades here in SD. Tons of dead birds at the end of the season. This year...I've been making my usual circuit to the lakes I fish in the spring. Normally I enjoy seeing all the roosters in their spring attire...beautiful. This spring they are just not there. South Dakota formally states they never publish "numbers"...I suspect for good reason. Every year is a good year according to the GF&P. I was born and raised in SD...I know what I should be seeing.

Let me leave you with this example: Just this last Thursday I drove from Tea, SD (just south of Sioux Falls) to Watertown SD. I was buying a gun from a guy up there. That's over 200 miles round trip. I left late afternoon about 4:30. Birds should be out and about. I DIDN'T SEE ONE SINGLE ROOSTER. For this time of year in SD...that just ain't right. I was fishing a lake called 'Diamond Lake' last night up to dark. Heard only ONE bloody rooster crow. Again...that ain't right. If you think I'm pulling a troll here...go ahead and come. I'm in no position to stop you. But unless you have a booked hunt with an outfitter on land managed for birds...public land birds are going to be DAMED hard to come by this year...probably the next several.
