The one shell in the gun at a time is a good idea. The principal point of my comments was that safety issues are even more applicable when you've got an inexperienced shooter in the blind or boat with you. It's a different environment than standing behind a youngster coaching them at the range. If dad controls the shells and only feeds them out one at a time then I agree, the auto, if it fits within the budget, may make for a better hunting experience. Probably a good rule for a begginer regardless of whether a pump or auto is used. If dad doesn't, then I believe additional cautions should be considered in gun choice.
