Is this real? If so that is “canary in coal mine” stuff.
The guy that I know that took the picture wrote this.

I shared this many years ago, and it spread like wildfire on the "net". Its making its rounds again .... The first time I encountered it, it was 2 in the morning, in Northern Monterey County and I was skinning 15 hogs in the head lights of the truck. I had killed the hogs on a Depredation permit, and at the time had to field dress them . I was a bit perplexed!!! Just a short time previous, I had come upon 6 dead sheep whos belly's were a tint of blue. They had been killed from Copper Sulphate put in a water tank to kill algae, so I assumed that this hog had done the same . When I called the Warden to pick up the hogs, I mentioned it to him, and he in turn alerted the Biologist . Come to find out it was a good thing we mentioned it!!!

Studies were done and came back as squirrel poison, but also traces of the toxicant 1080,which was used as coyote control, but banned in the 1970's.It seen a comeback after the State of California took steel traps away. Blue Dye was put on the treated grain , and that's supposedly where the " blue", comes from. The Toxicant can be a secondary poison ...meaning it can kill you if you eat what ate it. I did encounter this a few times after as well. From what I was told, hogs are immune to high doses of toxicants....even 1080....supposedly...?(edit...according to Ai (No, swine are not immune to 1080 poison (sodium fluoroacetate). While they can be susceptible to it, they can also survive sub-lethal doses and develop an aversion to it 1080 is toxic to a wide range of animals, including mammals and birds. )

1080 is deadly to anything. So deadly they die on the spot. When they say traces now days they can measure parts per billion. One drop in an olympic sized swimming pool
The blue squirrel bait is an anti coagulant that counties use for squirrel abatement. They broadcast which makes it available to non target animals.

New Zealand still uses 1080 to kill non native species. Nixon put at least a partial end to its use here. May have been limited use a while after that and in experimental livestock protection collars. I have read conflicting things as to its actual toxicity when it comes to avian species. It is absolutely deadly on canids. It is naturally occurring in some plants and has a use history going back to around 1250.

It's used in Australia like it's going out of style.
